21st Century Threat: Doctors Discussed Cancer Prevention

 
On March 6th, 2021, in the framework of World Cancer Day, National Scientific Conference «Cancer Prevention» took place in the online format.
 
The event attracted leading specialists in oncology and related disciplines from Russia (Omsk, Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Tomsk, Ekaterinburg, Barnaul, Ufa, Nalchik) and Donetsk People’s Republic.
 
In the opening remarks, Prof. Maria A. LIVZAN, MD, PhD, Rector of OSMU, has noted the undeniable importance of the unity of science and practical medicine, especially in the context of early diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
 
Prof. Viktor K. KOSENOK, MD, PhD, Head of Oncology and Radiotherapy Department, has mentioned that the fight against cancer is one of the top priorities of the National Project «Healthcare». The oncology program is aimed at reducing cancer mortality by detecting stage I and II cancer, increasing life expectancy to 80 years by 2030. To achieve these goals, more than one trillion rubles have been invested in the implementation of the program for the first time in the history of Russian medicine.
 
The Symposium continued with a panel «Oncology in the Russian Federation: 2021 vector», where Professors from OSMU, Almazov National Medical Research Center (Saint-Petersburg) and Astrakhan State Medical University presented their reports. Speakers covered the issues of stomach cancer risk in patients with chronic gastritis, effective pain management in oncology, nutritional support for cancer patients, and the cardiotoxic effects of radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
 
More than 20 reports on burning issues of diagnostics and treatment in oncology were presented in a total of three panels.
