Congratulations on Successful Performance at The Olympiad

On May 22-23, a team of students and residents of the OSMU Department of Maxillofacial Surgery took part in the First St. Petersburg Russian Olympiad for students and residents in Surgical Dentistry and Maxillofacial surgery with international participation "Manus et Mente", organized by Moscow State Medical University.

The Olympiad was held in three main stages: a business card contest, theoretical and practical contests. On the first stage, it was necessary to submit an application in a timely manner and provide video information about the University and research activities. After assessment of the business cards teams were invited to the Olympiad.

The Olympiad began with a grand opening, where the Rector of Pavlov St. Petersburg State Medical University, the Vice-rector, heads of specialized departments and representatives of dental associations made welcoming speeches. On the same day, a scientific conference "Dentistry from tradition to Innovation" was held, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Professor M.M. SOLOVYOV. The participants listened to reports from leading experts on current trends and innovations in surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery.

After the Conference, a theoretical stage took place: students and residents performed tests, solved clinical problems, and analyzed X-ray images. The second day was dedicated to the practical stage and summing up. The practical part took place at Arte Surgical Training Center and included performing manual skills on simulation equipment like plastic closure of the oroantral communication with a trapezoidal flap from the vestibule, closure of the defect with a revascularized fibular autograft, microvascular stage and end-to-end anastomosis, elimination of multiple gum recessions, resection of the tip of a multi-root tooth. All manipulations were performed under the control of an operating microscope.

Following the results of two days of competition, the OSMU team represented by Mikhail SMIRNOV, Denis KHIZHUK, Anastasia ALEXANDROVA, Kristina GAYDOMAK and Violetta KRAKHMALEVA, demonstrated a high level of training. All participants received certificates, and the winners and prize—winners received diplomas in a solemn atmosphere at the closing ceremony of the Olympiad. Kristina GAYDOMAK, a 2nd year resident, took second place in the competition among "Surgical Dentistry" residents.

Participation in the Manus et Mente Olympiad has become a significant stage of professional growth for students and residents of the department. The experience gained, knowledge exchange with future colleagues from different regions and countries, as well as success in competitive tasks confirm the high level of educational and practical training at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery. Congratulations to the team, teachers and management of the Department on their worthy participation and prize-winning place, and we wish you new victories!
