Congratulations on the World Physical Therapy Day
World Physical Therapy Day is annually observed on September 8. This date marks the day when the World Confederation for Physical Therapy was founded in 1951. It strives to raise awareness about the role physical therapy plays in maintaining health. Prof. Vadim A. AKHMEDOV, MD, PhD, Head of the Department of Medical Rehabilitation told about features of profession, education, and training of a physiotherapist.
About Profession
Annually physiotherapists help millions of people to regain or strengthen their health. Unexpected trauma, chronic illnessees, anomalies, or age-related diseases – all of them are indications for a physiotherapist’s appointment. The specialist will examine the nervous and muscular systems, prescribe an individual training program, and teach a patient those movements that will help him/her to be as independent as possible in everyday life. The other physiotherapy treatment techniques may include electrotherapy, magnetotherapy, kinesiotherapy, massage, baths, carboxytherapy, water aerobics, etc. According to Prof. Vadim A. AKHMEDOV, the advantages of physiotherapy are the absence of side effects and compatibility with drugs. Moreover, many people have been aware of this kind of therapy since childhood when they were treated with UHF- and UV-therapy from the diseases of ENT organs.
Focus of Attention
The work of physiotherapists is complex. In addition to patients who need to recover from an illness or injury, physiotherapists treat patients with pain syndrome caused by muscle tension due to physical inactivity and constant stress.
Another work area of these specialists is rehabilitation after sports injuries. «Our graduates work in different sports and rehabilitation centers because sports physiotherapy is a definite field, where electrical stimulation is used to quickly restore the muscle tone. Sports medicine and physiotherapy are cross-disciplinary» – said Vadim A. AKHMEDOV.
About Training
In Omsk, professional training for physiotherapists is conducted at OSMU Medical Rehabilitation Department. As Prof. Vadim A. AKHMEDOV explains a lot of doctors admit the courses for professional retraining working as general physicians, pediatricians, neurologists, traumatologists, etc.
Vadim A. AKHMEDOV reports, that physical therapy is a curious and rewarding profession, because you can immediately see the results of treatment, when a patient gets rid of pain, contractures, or joint stiffness. It causes both pride and pleasure from the work done.
Besides the courses for professional retraining to become a physiotherapist, a graduate can choose a residency programme in Medical Gymnastics and Sports Medicine.
New Educational Programs
In November 2021, the staff of the Medical Rehabilitation Department is ready to implement a new educational program for training in physical and rehabilitation therapy. The program will allow the specialists to work in large rehabilitation centers within a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team, and coordinate all recovery activities for each incoming patient.
Moreover, the Department plans to implement the educational program on International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health to help a patient live a full-on life.
Being in Demand
Today, specialized centers are shortage of specialists in physiotherapy; due to that fact a residency program has been extended by the number of state-funded places. We hope that all these aggregated efforts aimed at making physical rehabilitation even better and more affordable for the widest range of patients.
