Heroes of the Year

On March 19th, four OSMU employees were solemnly awarded for their heroic fight against COVID-19.

A solemn event was held in the Omsk Concert Hall and was attended by healthcare workers who provided medical care at the height of the pandemic. The event was held exactly one year after the confirmation of the first COVID-19 case and the following announcement of a lockdown in the Omsk Region. The big-screen broadcasted a timeline of the pandemic: from the first days of the fight against an unknown disease, the arranging additional hospital beds, to the gradual adaptation to a new reality. The words of gratitude to the heroes of the year were expressed by the leaders of the Region: Alexander L. BURKOV, Governor of the Omsk Region, and Alexander G. MURAKHOVSKII, Minister of Public Health of the Omsk Region.

«Last year has changed our outlook on many things. We have learned that there is no such luxury as simple human companionship, the health of our loved ones and those who save our lives. Thank you for your bravery and for your decision to dedicate yourself to medicine and service to the people», - said Alexander BURKOV.

«I would like to express my deep gratitude to my colleagues. The pandemic has taught us to work pushing beyond our limits, fight our inner fears, and be on standby at all times. We are at a turning point in the fight against the pandemic: we move from defense to offense creating an environment in which the coronavirus cannot spread. And this is your merit, dear colleagues», - said Alexander MURAKHOVSKII.

Three dozen healthcare workers have received honorary awards, including Medals for High Achievements for treating COVID-19 patients. Eugenia A. BAIGOZINA, a Prof. of the Department of Internal Medicine (Advanced level), Larisa V. PUZYREVA, a Prof. Assoc. of the Department of Phthisiology, Phthisiosurgery and Infectious Diseases, and Sergei V. CHERNENKO, a Prof. Assoc. of the Department of the General Surgery, were awarded with the Badge of Merit of I Degree for Service to the Omsk Region. Gennady G. SIDOROV, a resident of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (Postgraduate Course), has been granted the Diploma of the Government of the Omsk Region.

A minute of silence was held in memory of 14 doctors who passed away selflessly fighting COVID-19. Medals for Service to the Omsk Region were given posthumously to the relatives of the doctors.

Today, thousands of Omsk doctors work in the Regional COVID-hospitals, and each of them is ready to sacrifice themselves for the lives of others.
