OSMU Department of Preventive Dentistry together with the Department of Microbiology, Virology, and Immunology hosted an Olympiad in Medical Microbiology, bringing together students from the dental faculties of OSMU and the I.K. Akhunbaev Kyrgyz State Medical Academy (Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic). The mixed format of the event allowed to create a platform for demonstrating knowledge and developing the clinical thinking of future physicians.
The first qualifying round of the Olympiad identified the most prepared students with a solid theoretical foundation. Participants who successfully completed this round were admitted to the second, in-person round, where they had to demonstrate not only theoretical and practical skills. The final round was distinctly practice-oriented. Participants worked in teams, solving clinical and situational tasks requiring analysis, logical thinking, and quick decision-making.
The Olympiad's unique atmosphere was enhanced by team spirit and healthy competition – participants not only strived for victory but also supported each other, exchanged opinions, and collaborated on solutions to complex problems. This format fosters the development of communication skills, the ability to work in a team, and collective decision-making – qualities crucial for future specialists.
Holding such events highlights the importance of in-depth study of medical microbiology as a fundamental discipline underlying clinical practice. The Olympiad was a shining example of how the integration of theoretical knowledge and a practice-oriented approach contributes to the development of students' professional competencies. The organizers commend the high level of preparation of the participants and express confidence that such events will continue to contribute to the development of students' scientific potential and the strengthening of interuniversity collaboration.
