OSMU Dentistry Students Take Part in International Olympiad in Aesthetic Restoration

A team of students from the Faculty of Dentistry at OSMU took part in the International Student Olympiad in Aesthetic Restoration, organized by the Department of Conservative Dentistry of Belarusian State Medical University at the Republican Clinical Dental Center.

The Olympiad brought together students and young researchers from leading medical universities and specialized educational centers in Minsk, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Simferopol, Barnaul, and Omsk. Such international educational platforms play an important role in the professional training of future dentists, contributing to the development of clinical thinking, the improvement of manual skills, the formation of research competencies, and the strengthening of interuniversity academic cooperation.

The OSMU team included Nikita PELYAK, team captain, Sofia BUSHUEVA, Grigory KOSORUKOV, Anna OLKINA, Victoria KOLOMIETS, Victoria MAKHROVA, and Alexander LOKONOV. The team’s scientific supervisor was Prof. Larisa M. LOMIASHVILI, DMD, Dr Sci (in Medicine), Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Head of the Department of Preventive Dentistry.

As part of the Olympiad, participants completed practical, scientific, and educational tasks aimed at assessing their professional competencies in therapeutic dentistry, aesthetic restoration, and endodontics. One of the competition stages involved performing a Black Class IV restoration on a phantom model. The practical task was completed by Anna OLKINA under the scientific supervision of Evgeny V. KHOROLSKY, DMD, Prof. Asst. of the Department of Preventive Dentistry.

Participation in such simulation-based stages allows students to improve their skills in working with modern composite materials, master the principles of minimally invasive treatment, and enhance clinical accuracy when restoring the anatomical shape and aesthetic appearance of teeth.

The scientific part of the Olympiad was presented by Victoria KOLOMIETS with a report entitled «The Role of Chelating Agents in Improving the Effectiveness of Root Canal Irrigation». The study, supervised by Kira V. VETKOVA, DMD, PhD (in Medicine), Assoc. Prof. of the Department of Preventive Dentistry, addressed current issues in modern endodontics, including the optimization of root canal medication protocols and the improvement of endodontic space disinfection.

Following the results of the competition, the OSMU team demonstrated a high level of professional training and a creative approach, taking second place in the erudition contest and second place in the team video presentation contest.

Participation in international Olympiads helps students develop professional motivation, academic mobility, and communication skills, while also supporting the integration of modern educational technologies into the training of future dental specialists. Such events are an important part of practice-oriented education aimed at training competitive and clinically competent dentists.
