Ahead of the holidays, OSMU held the Student Scientific Conference «Prevention of Dental Diseases. The Role of Professional and Individual Oral Hygiene», dedicated to World Toothbrush Day.
The event was organized by Prof. Larisa M. LOMIASHVILI, DMD, Dr Sci (in Medicine), Dean of the Dentistry Faculty, Head of the Department of Preventive Dentistry, and Irina M. VOLOSHINA, DMD, Dr Sci (in Medicine), Prof. of the Preventive Dentistry Department, Deputy Dean of the Dentistry Faculty for Education.
The Conference brought together students, academic staff, and practicing specialists interested in preventive dentistry, one of the most promising areas of modern medicine. The international format gave the event special significance: colleagues from Kyrgyzstan joined the Conference online, which helped expand professional dialogue and exchange experience in the prevention of dental diseases.
The honorary online guest of the Conference was Olesya V. SHEVCHENKO, DMD, Dr Sci (in Medicine), Chairperson of the Professional Society of Dental Hygienists of Russia. She delivered an online report dedicated to current trends in preventive dentistry, the development of a culture of health, and the role of professional oral hygiene in maintaining the dental health of the population.
During the Conference, students presented scientific reports on modern individual oral hygiene products, patient motivation for the prevention of dental diseases, innovative technologies in professional oral hygiene, and the specific features of preventive work with patients of different age groups.
Such conferences play an important role in professional training, helping future doctors develop preventive clinical thinking. In modern medicine, special emphasis is placed not only on treatment, but also on disease prevention, health preservation, and improving patients’ quality of life. Student participation in scientific conferences helps develop research culture, clinical thinking, communication skills, and the ability to present academic work. Preparing reports, engaging in professional discussions, and interacting with leading experts also strengthen students’ motivation for continuous professional growth and evidence-based practice.
The educational and personal development value of such events is equally important. International professional communication fosters respect for the scientific traditions of different countries, promotes academic cooperation, strengthens students’ sense of responsibility for their work, and encourages the continuous improvement of professional skills. Such meetings help shape the professional identity of future doctors, fostering humanism, a strong medical culture, commitment to preventive healthcare, and readiness for interdisciplinary and international cooperation.
