On October 12, 2024, OSMU hosted the Sino-Russian Medical School «Preventive Nutrition in Chronic NCDs», organized in collaboration with Harbin Medical University under the auspices of the Association of Sino-Russian Medical Universities. This significant event marked another step in strengthening the international ties of our University with its long-standing partner, expanding joint scientific and educational projects.
The main goal of the event has been to familiarize participants with the modern concepts of non-drug prevention strategies for chronic non-communicable diseases. The School has become a platform for the exchange of advanced experiences between Russian and Chinese specialists and for discussing the aspects of healthcare organization and dietetic practices in both countries.
The School opened with welcoming speeches by Prof. ZHANG Junsheng, Vice Dean of the College of International Education of Harbin Medical University (HMU), and Prof. Maria A. LIVZAN, OSMU Rector, Corresponding Member of RAS. They emphasized the importance and necessity of holding events of this format.
Prof. Maria A. LIVZAN presented a lecture where she emphasized the importance of monitoring healthy nutrition in Russia and expressed confidence that the joint efforts of Russian and Chinese specialists would lead to new achievements in preventive medicine.
A lecture in respect to the foundations of healthy nutrition was delivered by Prof. Denis V. TURCHANINOV, a Head of the Department of Hygiene and Nutrition. His lecture sparked keen interest from the audience, resulting in many questions about specific principles of nutrition.
Assoc. Prof. Alexander N. ZOLOTOV, Department of Pathophysiology, in his presentation discussed metabolism and obesity. He analyzed in detail the pathophysiological mechanisms of metabolic disorders, laying the groundwork for a deeper understanding of the causes and methods for obesity treatment.
A lecture by Prof. Grigory M. USOV, a Head of the Department of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology, devoted to eating disorders attracted special interest from the audience. He examined the psycho-emotional aspects of nutrition, highlighting the impact of external factors on the formation of unhealthy eating habits. The focus on mental health in the context of eating disorders is a modern trend in evidence-based medicine that enhances the effectiveness of therapeutic approaches.
Assoc. Prof. Natalia Yu. VLASENKO, Department of Pediatrics, gave a presentation on childhood obesity. She presented statistical data on the rise of childhood obesity in Russia and worldwide, discussed risk factors, including rare genetic mutations and somatic pathologies, and shared her experience in managing obese patients by demonstrating cases from her medical practice.
Assoc. Prof. Inna V. DRUK, a Head of the Department of Internal and Family Medicine, presented a report on nutrition in type 2 diabetes. She detailed the features of dietary therapy for this condition and presented modern recommendations for developing individualized nutrition plans.
Assoc. Prof. Ekaterina N. LOGINOVA, Department of Internal and Family Medicine, covered the prevention of cardiovascular diseases through dietary therapy. In her lecture, she highlighted the role of micro- and macronutrients in maintaining cardiovascular health and provided practical recommendations for adjusting diets for patients at high risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Assoc. Prof. Tatyana S. KROLEVETS, Department of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, discussed metabolically associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and the importance of nutritional adjustment for patients with this diagnosis. She outlined modern approaches to the dietary treatment of MAFLD, including the use of functional foods and nutraceuticals.
Assoc. Prof. Galina R. BIKBAVOVA, Department of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, presented modern approaches to the nutritional support of patients with chronic gastrointestinal diseases and provided practical advice on managing patients with gastrointestinal pathology.
And last, but not least, it was a lecture by Assoc. Prof. Olga V. GAUS, the Department of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, entitled ‘Gluten Intolerance’, where she discussed diagnostic criteria for celiac disease, the features of a gluten-free diet, and new perspectives in the treatment of this condition.
During the live broadcast, participants actively asked questions and shared their views on nutritional aspects, significantly enriching the dialogue between countries and strengthening academic ties.
The School has been closed by Prof. Maria A. LIVZAN and Prof. Zhang Junsheng, who emphasized the importance of such international educational initiatives. They expressed hope for continued fruitful cooperation, opening new horizons for the development of medical science in close collaboration between Russia and China.
OSMU has once again served as the venue for such a significant event, bringing together leading specialists from both countries! Undoubtedly, knowledge and experience gained during this School will form the foundation for new scientific discoveries and the improvement for the quality of medical care.
