OSMU Students Studied and Trained Abroad thsi Summer

OSMU students studied and completed internships abroad this summer. From July 13th to August 3rd, Asel NURKUSHEVA, a 4th-year student of the Faculty of General Medicine, attended the International Summer School "Big Data in Medicine and Intelligent Statistics" at Sun Yat-sen University (China).

The summer school lasted nearly three weeks and was held at the Sun Yat-sen University campuses in Guangzhou and Shenzhen. The program included not only the curriculum but also a trip to the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI). The primary focus was on medical data analysis, biostatistics, and genetics. Theory was immediately reinforced by practice, as attendees studied DNA sequencing methods, calculated statistical probabilities, and wrote Python scripts for nucleotide sequence analysis. The program of the school also allowed exploring current clinical and applied areas: in neurology, students discussed the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, in pulmonology – analyzed lung cancer statistics, and in health economics – assessed the feasibility of investing in research. A separate course was also devoted to the integration of artificial intelligence in medicine. The faculty was also international, with lectures delivered by professors from China, Australia, Denmark, Malaysia, and Mexico, as well as the participants themselves. The program brought together students from more than 40 countries, including medical professionals, bioengineering specialists, and computer scientists.
