Preserving Native Language

February 21, 2022, OSMU Department of Philosophy, Humanities and Social Sciences held an event dedicated to International Mother Language Day, a holiday established in 1999 by the decision of the 30th session of the UNESCO General Conference. OSMU students, Russian-speaking and native speakers of foreign languages, joined the action.

Our country is famous for the diversity of people living on its territory and the number of languages they speak. As of 2021, there are 193 nations and approximately 277 languages and dialects in Russia. More than 60 languages are included in the Red Book of Languages of the Peoples of Russia.

Each nation has a unique culture, history, traditions, lifestyle, and, of course, language. Language is the soul of people. On International Mother Language Day, the world community is reminded that all languages are recognized as equals because each bears a historical memory and represents a living heritage that we must take seriously and protect.
