16 Genetic Epidemiology of Parkinson's disease (GEoPD) Annual Meeting and I Siberian Neurocongress – 2021 was held in Omsk on October 7 and 8.
GEoPD is a global consortium of researchers dedicated to promoting education, scientific research, and translational development in Parkinson’s disease. The consortium has been operating since 2004 and has an active membership from more than 60 sites on six continents. A forum of consortium members is organized annually to discuss unpublished data and ideas, highlight research issues or needs, and identify global opportunities for partnerships.
In 2018, Omsk State Medical University became a member of the GeoPD Consortium and launched a joint project Systems Biomedicine of Parkinson’s Disease: comprehensive analysis of fundamental and applied aspects, where the clinical data of patients with Parkinson's disease were assessed. One of the areas of cooperation between OSMU and Neurology Scientific Center with GEoPD consortium is HELP-PD Guideline (Healthy Ageing of the Luxembourgish Population with a focus on Parkinson’s Disease), which was developed together with Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine, LCSB. This guideline calls for analysis of anamnestic, epidemiological, pathogenetic, clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic aspects of Parkinson's disease with an assessment of the influence of various environmental factors on the course of the disease.
16 GEoPD Annual Meeting was held together with I Siberian Neurocongress-2021 with International Participation. The work of the Congress was organized in the following scientific areas: modern approaches in diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, pediatric neurology, epilepsy in neurosciences, burning issues of neurosurgery, borderline psychoneurology, treatment and rehabilitation of vascular diseases in the clinical work of a neurologist. The Congress attracted 90 participants from far-abroad countries and more than 500 participants from Russia.
On October 7, Alexander G. MURAKHOVSKY, Minister of Health of the Omsk Region, and Prof. Maria A. LIVZAN, Rector of OSMU, opened the plenary session with the welcoming speech.
Alexander G. MURAKHOVSKY noted the significant social aspect of the issues discussed in the reports, in particular Parkinson's disease, which comes together with not only a high risk of mortality but also a decrease in the quality of life of the patients themselves and their loved ones. He also expressed the hope that the considered theoretical issues related to the diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson's disease will soon be introduced into practical medicine.
According to Maria A. LIVZAN, the remote format of the Conference allowed expanding the geography of participants, which, in turn, will allow finding new growth points for the development of Parkinson's disease study. She reminded that thanks to the joint work of OSMU and Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine, our University became a member of the GeoPD Consortium, which is aimed at researching the genetic epidemiology of Parkinson's disease around the world. Moreover, GEoPD Presidium decided to hold an annual conference in Omsk. «I am sure that these scientific events will contribute to improving the international cooperation between the University and foreign partners, and to the establishment of new contacts, the creation of joint projects and the birth of new ideas!» - said Maria A. LIVZAN.
The plenary session continued with the report of Prof. Sergey N. ILLARIOSHKIN, MD, PhD, Corresponding Member of RAS, Deputy Director for Research, Head of the Research Center of Neurology, dedicated to the genetic bases of Parkinson's disease in the Russian population. The Conference was divided into sections, which included reports from the leading specialists in the field of neurosurgery from Germany, Great Britain, USA, Sweden, Finland, Thailand, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Tomsk, Omsk, Kemerovo, and Izhevsk.
Prof. Rejko KRUEGER, MD, PhD, Head of the Clinical and Experimental Neurology Department of the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine, Head of the GEoPD Consortium, opened the «Parkinson's disease as a systems disorder» session. Scientists from Universities of Europe, the USA, Asia and Omsk State Medical University presented their research on the topics «Parkinson's Disease and Cognition», «Parkinson's Disease and the Inflammatory Process», «Microbiome and Metabolome in Parkinson's Disease».
This session was organized in the Regional Congress Hall. Roman A. DELOV, MD, PhD, Prof. Assoc. of the Neurology and Neurosurgery Department of the Omsk State Medical University, presented his report «Genetic polymorphism of Parkinson’s Disease in Siberian population».
- Neurodegenerative diseases are a 21st-century challenge. Prevalence rates of Parkinson's disease are increasing worldwide, including in Russia. The study of the mechanisms of its development is the most urgent task facing the world scientific community, and the results will become fundamental for therapeutic tactics in patients with this condition. This problem is also urgent for Omsk, as there are about three thousand patients with this pathology in the Region. Although this number of patients may seem small, they are represented by an understudied clinical form. It is important to personalize the therapy option for each unique population of patients.
The remaining sections were devoted to modern approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases, pediatric neurology, neurosurgery, and diseases of the PNS.
On October 7, on the first day of I Siberian Neurocongress – 2021, Anna P. SKROMETS, MD, PhD, Professor at the Neurology Department of the Pavlov University (Saint Petersburg), Chief Pediatric Neurologist of the Northwestern Federal District, gave a lecture on neurological aspects of mental function formation. After the lecture, Prof. Skromets conducted a master class "Neurological Examination of Infants and Young Children," with an analysis of the medications for complex patients and the use of a specific type of acupuncture, pharmacopuncture.
- A new generation of parents values different things. While in the 1990s there were many children, especially girls, who at the age of one were already speaking well, now the speech development of children has shifted massively by the age of four due to the lack of communication between parents and their children. Speech development is not an innate skill, it must be developed from the first weeks of a child's life. It was noticed that during the period of self-isolation, children's communication skills developed much faster under the influence of daily forced communication with parents! – said Prof. Skromets.
Prof. Andrey V. PISKLAKOV, MD, PhD, Vice-Rector for Research, Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery and Reproductive Health for Children and Adolescents, Pediatric Surgeon and Pediatric Urologist-Andrologist of the highest category, has presented an interim summary of the GEoPD Annual Meeting and I Siberian Neurocongress – 2021. He emphasized that representatives of GEoPD Consortium highly appreciate the level of research in the field of neurological pathologies and Parkinson's disease in OSMU, which gives grounds to continue the fruitful cooperation and present the results of further findings at the 17th Annual GEoPD Conference in Stockholm in 2022.
