On June 6, 2023, OSMU hosted the National e-Olympiad of Professional Skills in Surgical Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery. The event attracted students and residents from 7 federal districts, 14 educational organizations, and Central Research Institute of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery. The Olympiad was organized by Dentistry Departments of OSMU, Topographic Anatomy and Operative Surgery Department of OSMU, Federal Center for Support of Volunteering and Mentoring in the Field of Health Protection of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Council of Young Scientists of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Health of the Omsk Region.
The Olympiad was aimed at developing motivation, identifying talented dental students and residents in the specialties “Surgical Dentistry” and “Maxillofacial Surgery”, developing competencies and professionalism in theoretical, practical, and research activities, and popularizing surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery among young people.
The Olympiad started with the welcoming words delivered by Prof. Assoc. Elmira Sh. GRIGOROVICH, MD, PhD, Head of the Dentistry (Postgraduate Course) Department of OSMU, Chairperson of the Olympiad, and Prof. Vladimir D. VAGNER, MD, PhD, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation, Head of the Department of Organization of the Dental Service, Licensing and Accreditation of the Central Research Institute of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery, Prof. of the Dentistry (Postgraduate Course) Department of OSMU.
The Olympiad included two practical competitions (closure of the perforation of the maxillary sinus; elimination of a single recession with the help of a free connective tissue graft) and one theoretical competition (test on the main sections of topographic anatomy and operative surgery of head and neck). At the final stage, each team showed a video on the topic: “The students’ scientific society of my university is a talent foundry in the field of surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery”.
OSMU students and residents were awarded a number of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-place Diplomas in individual and team all-rounds.
Sponsors of the Olympiad represented by the private dental clinics awarded the winners and prize-winners with valuable prizes, and the best students and residents - with certificates for employment in medical commercial organizations.
“We already have sufficient experience in holding such events. We are very grateful to all participants, mentors, and universities for their interest in our Olympiad. All teams demonstrated the highest level of theoretical and practical training. We are particularly proud of the fact that our teams received six1st-, four 2nd-, and two 3rd-place Diplomas in the individual all-rounds, and 1st-place Diplomas in the team all-rounds. This undoubtedly speaks of the continuity of generations in surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery in the Omsk Region.
