The III Siberian NeuroCongress

 
On May 16, OSMU hosted the III Siberian NeuroCongress, held in honor of Yuri N. SAVCHENKO, MD, PhD, Honored Professor of OSMU, Laureate of the Russian State Prize in Science and Technology, Honored Physician of the Russian Federation, and veteran of the Great Patriotic War. Prof. SAVCHENKO was a distinguished representative of the Savchenko academic dynasty, whose contributions significantly shaped the Omsk school of neurology.
 
The plenary session opened with welcoming remarks by Dmitry A. RYABIKOV, Deputy Minister of Health of the Omsk Region, and Prof. Olga V. KORPACHEVA, MD, PhD, Vice-Rector for Research at OSMU. She conveyed congratulations from Prof. Maria A. LIVZAN, MD, PhD, OSMU Rector, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The session also included greetings from Viktor E. DUDAREV, MD, Deputy Chief Surgeon of the Omsk Regional Clinical Hospital, and a keynote lecture commemorating the 100th anniversary of Prof. SAVCHENKO’s birth, delivered by Prof. Valery I. LARKIN, MD, PhD, Head of the OSMU Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, including Postgraduate Training Courses.
 
The scientific program continued with plenary presentations, including:
  • «Innovation in Neurosurgery: From Concept to Implementation» by Prof. Konstantin A. SAMOCHERNYKH, MD, Director of the Polenov Russian Neurosurgical Institute, a branch of the Almazov National Medical Research Centre;
  • «Opportunities to Enhance Stroke Therapy and Rehabilitation» by Prof. Vitaly V. KOVALCHUK, MD, Head of the Medical Rehabilitation Center at City Hospital № 38, St. Petersburg;
  • «The Role of Gut Microbiota in the Pathogenesis of Neurodegenerative Diseases» by Assoc. Prof. Olga V. GAUS, MD, PhD, Prof. of the Department of Internal Medicine (Intermediate Level) and Gastroenterology, OSMU.
 
Over fifty reports were presented by leading neurologists and neurosurgeons from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Kaliningrad, Novosibirsk, Voronezh, Orenburg, Surgut, Omsk, and Tashkent. Scientific topics covered included neurosurgery, neuropsychiatry, rehabilitation in modern neurology, pediatric neurology and neurosurgery, diagnostic neuroradiology, and pain management in neurological practice.
 
In the «Neurology and Rehabilitation» section, distinguished Russian specialists shared their clinical insights. Notable presentations by OSMU representatives included:
  • «Therapeutic Approaches to Pre-Dementia Cognitive Impairments» by Assoc. Prof. Yuri V. LALOV, MD, the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, including Postgraduate Training Courses;
  • «Regenerative Cell Therapy in Epilepsy» by Prof. Stepan I. ERENIEV, MD, PhD, Department of Occupational Health;
  • «Back Pain Management in Patients in 2025» by Assoc. Prof. Igor N. STEPANOV, MD, PhD, the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, including Postgraduate Training Courses;
  • «Clinical and Neuroimaging Correlations in Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction Post-Stroke» by Assoc. Prof. Elina A. MELNIK, MD, PhD, the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, including Postgraduate Training Courses;
  • «Key Issues in Cardiac Rehabilitation» by Assoc. Prof. Anna S. ISAEVA, MD, PhD, Department of Medical Rehabilitation, including Postgraduate Training Courses;
  • «Hidden Aspects of Parkinson’s Disease: Pain and Mood Disorders Among Non-Motor Symptoms» by Elena V. SAVCHENKO, MD, Prof. Asst. of the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, including Postgraduate Training Courses;
 
The «Neurosurgery» section showcased clinically oriented talks by experts from across Siberia and the Republic of Uzbekistan. Highlights included:
  • «Emergency Conditions of the Spine» by Prof. Galina N. DOROVSKIKH, MD, the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, including Postgraduate Training Courses;
  • «Management of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury» by Prof. Alexey G. KALINICHEV, MD, the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, including Postgraduate Training Courses;
  • «Surgical Treatment of Non-Traumatic Intracranial Hematomas in Children» by Assoc. Prof. Vladislav V. MISHKIN, MD, the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, including Postgraduate Training Courses.
 
Pediatric neurology and neurosurgery had a dedicated session, with contributions from OSMU including:
  • «Cerebral Trauma with Subcortical Ischemia in Children» by Prof. Igor I. LARKIN, MD, the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, including Postgraduate Training Courses;
  • «Vertigo in Pediatric Patients» by Assoc. Prof. Irina A. SHCHERBINA, MD, the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, including Postgraduate Training Courses;
  • «The Role of Routine Genetic Testing in Pediatric Epilepsy Surgery» by Assoc. Prof. Olga I. SHESTAKOVA, MD, the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, including Postgraduate Training Courses;
  • «Ultrasound in Diagnosing Birth-Related Head Injuries» by Assoc. Prof. Kseniya A. BARDEEVA, MD, Department of Pediatric Surgery and Reproductive Health for Children and Adolescents.
 
Neurodegenerative diseases are one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century due to their growing global prevalence. Studying their etiology and mechanisms remains a key task for the international scientific community. The NeuroCongress clearly demonstrated the high level of domestic research in neurological pathology, laying a solid foundation for continued collaboration.
