On March 14-16, 2024, the National Conference «VII Western Siberian Psychiatric Forum» was held. The purpose of the Conference was to exchange opinions of psychiatrists, addiction psychiatrists, and psychotherapists on scientific achievements in the field of treatment of mental disorders.
In his welcoming speech, Assoc. Prof. Grigoriy M. USOV, MD, PhD, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, Medical Psychology mentioned that the Conference which started as the meetings of enthusiasts now attracted more and more speakers and participants. The first day of the Conference was dedicated to psychopathology, on the following days participants discussed practical issues of diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders and issues of the connection between mental disorders and brain dysfunction.
The main aspects of the Conference were focused around current problems of psychopathology at the present stage of psychiatry development, psychiatry methodology, and approaches to the treatment of mental disorders.
Today, the strong points of psychiatry are the skills of communicating with patients, organizing care and supervision of patients, clinical experience, and a knowledge base on psychopathology. Psychiatry is constantly expanding its area of expertise - from influencing the most pronounced forms of mental illness to borderline pathology and psychoprophylaxis, prognosis and occupational selection.
The honorary guests of the Conference were Tatyana P. KLYUSHNIK, Director of the Mental Health Research Center (MHRC, Moscow), Prof. Igor V. OLEICHIK, MD, PhD, Chief Researcher of the Clinical Department of Endogenous Mental Disorders and Affective States of MHRC (Moscow), Assoc. Prof. Andrey A. SHMILOVICH, MD, PhD, Head of the Department of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology of N. I. Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University (Moscow).
The first day of the Conference dedicated to general psychopathology was opened with the report of Grigoriy M. USOV entitled «The story of one misconception or how scientists tried to find the soul in the brain». The second day was aimed at understanding practical issues of diagnosis and treatment, and the last day was related to interdisciplinary problems of psychiatry and neurosciences.
Psychiatrists, psychiatrists-neurologists, psychotherapists, scientific and pedagogical workers, PhD students, and students took part in the Conference. It was held in a mixed format, which made it possible to listen to reports from leading psychiatrists and psychotherapists from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Tomsk, Rostov-on-Don, Omsk, Novosibirsk, and Krasnoyarsk.
The Omsk psychiatric school was represented by Grigoriy M. USOV and Dmitriy Yu. KOLOMYTSEV. Grigoriy M. USOV presented the reports on different topics: «Development of ideas about long-acting antipsychotics and new possibilities for maintenance treatment in schizophrenia», «Partial agonists of dopamine receptors: selective or multifaceted?» and «Principles of treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder according to clinical guidelines».
More than 200 people took part in the Conference. During the three days of its work, the participants heard almost 40 reports, lectures, and clinical case studies. The questions from the audience and spontaneous discussions spoke for the interest and relevance of the covered topics.
