World Heart Day is celebrated every year on September 29. It was founded in 2000 by World Heart Federation in order to increase awareness of the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In Russia, this day and the following week are called Russian National Healthy Heart Week.
Cardiovascular diseases are the group of heart and blood vessels diseases including coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral arterial disease, rheumatic heart disease, congenital heart disease, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
Heart attacks and strokes are usually acute events and are mainly caused by a blockage that prevents blood from flowing to the heart or brain.
According to World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death globally; roughly 17.5 million people worldwide die from cardiovascular diseases annually. Meanwhile more than 75% of deaths from these diseases occur in low- and middle-income countries.
Nowadays people who have cardiovascular accidents in their medical history can live longer due to new preventive and treatment methods.
According to scientists, the preventive methods are simple and available for every person, and can easily adjust in a daily routine. It takes only 150 minutes of walking or jogging per week, naps a couple of times a week, and a healthy diet, to minimize cardiovascular risk at least twice. World Health Organization recommends having in a routine diet non-fatty fish and 300-400 grams of daily fruits and vegetables. It is also important to reduce consumption of fast-digesting carbs, alcohol, nicotine, and fried food.
On World Heart Day, cardiologists from all over the world hold practical seminars and conferences.
