March 1st is celebrated each year as World Immunity Day. It was organized in 2002 by the World Health Organization to draw public attention to the problems of immune system disorders, preserving and strengthening the body’s natural defences.
Since ancient times, people with strong immune system did not get sick during epidemics thanks to their body defences. The human natural resistance is about 50% dependent on lifestyle. The most damaging effect on the immune system is caused by frequent stress, chronic sleep deprivation, overexposure to UV radiation, too much or no physical activity, bad habits, and uncontrolled use of antibiotics.
Food has a huge impact on our immune system too: excess glucose depresses the natural resistance and reduces the activity of antibodies. Consumption of breast milk protects the organism of an infant with a developing immune system; bifidobacteria and lactobacilli in fermented dairy products create the main protective barrier in the gastrointestinal tract.
Don't forget to follow simple rules to strengthen your immune system!
• Have daily walks in the fresh air
• Stick to a healthy diet
• Give up bad habits
• Set a healthy sleep schedule
• Engage in moderate physical activity
• Practice stress management: if you can't change the situation, take it for granted
