World Radiography Day

World Radiography Day is observed every year on November 8. This date marks the anniversary of the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen in 1895. It was the beginning of radiology development - a new and stunning direction in diagnostics, medicine, and science.

We interviewed Prof. Assoc. Elena Yu. KHOMUTOVA, MD, PhD, Head of the Radiodiagnostics Department. She told about the Residency Programs of the Departments, which includes X-ray Diagnostics, Ultrasound Diagnostics, and Radiology, and also mentioned the features of modern radiodiagnostics methods.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, MSCT plays a crucial role in the diagnostic process and allows specialists to reveal viral or bacterial pneumonia, determine the treatment strategy, identify complications of the diseases, and conduct monitoring at all stages of the disease.

Radiodiagnostic methods are also widely used in dentistry, maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics (for example, a cone-beam CT), and cardiology (endovascular image-guided interventions).

Despite the active development and use of all these techniques, doctor's experience, knowledge, and multidisciplinary approach remain the most important aspect of the diagnostic process.

-That is why radiologists actively collaborate specialties in other fields of medicine and fundamental disciplines. – says Elena KHOMUTOVA. - Nobody removed traditional X-ray examination from the general radiodiagnostics algorithm. It is not as actively used as it was at the beginning of the 20th century, but it remains the first step of instrumental diagnosis in patients with trauma or abdominal pain.

In addition to diagnostic, there are two screening methods: fluorography and mammography. Fluorography is aimed at detecting pulmonary tuberculosis, and everyone starting at the age of 14 should conduct it once a year. Mammography is aimed at the early detection of breast cancer, and it is recommended for women over the age of 40 years to conduct it every two years.

A radiologist is a responsible and very important medical specialty because the effectiveness of any type of therapy, and therefore the patient's health and life, depends on a reliable and timely diagnosis!
