Brief History

The foundation for the future Department was laid in 1926 when F.V. TANOV was assigned as the first Chief of Military Affairs of the Omsk Medical Institute. TANOV was a person in charge for the organization of training in military medical work and the assistant in the teaching of military-related disciplines. In September 1931, the Department of Military Sciences was established. The Department cooperated with the Faculties of General Medicine, Dentistry, and Preventive Medicine followed by the development of courses on the organization of military medical service, sanitary and chemical protection, and the medical service for air defense, including in-depth study of surgery and internal medicine in the war-field environment.

During the WWII, the Department began the training of military doctors for the Soviet Army.

Later, under the supervision of Colonel of Medical Service V.N. BUCHELNIKOV, a sport shooting range and a military medical training area were equipped as well as classrooms and laboratories for the Military Toxicology Course.

In 1993, the Department expanded the sphere of interests to focus on the emergency situations in peacetime and became known as the Department of Health and Safety, Disaster Medicine. Since 1998, the Head of the Department is a Colonel of Medical Service, Assoc. Prof. Ivan V. ASHVITS, MD, PhD. Today the Department is working on the issues of life safety in peacetime, continuing active cooperation with clinical departments to form a deep understanding of disaster medicine among medical students.
