Brief History

The Department was established in 1921 when the Medical Faculty of the Siberian Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Zoology was reorganized into the West Siberian State Medical Institute. Prof. Konstantin V. ROMODANOVSKII was assigned as a first Head.

Under the supervision of Prof. Romodanovskii, OSMU Anatomical Museum was established. Constant modernization, expansion of the museum, and implementation of the up-to-date technologies continue to these days, allowing the Department to remain a modern and convenient place for education and research.

Since 1927, Prof. Romodanovskii actively studied the lymphatic system and its connection with cerebrospinal fluid, which later served for the development of lymphology in Russia and beyond.

In different periods the Department was headed by:
1931-1933 – Assoc. Prof. Boris N. BAZHENOV
1933-1947 – Prof. Petr A. SOKOLOV. His research interests were macro-microscopic anatomy of the nerves of the extremities, age and typical features of the position and projection of various organs, vessels and nerves onto external landmarks. He was one of the first to describe the three main types of blood supply to the heart, and proposed an original technique for X-ray imaging of blood vessels using contrast.
1947-1971 – Prof. Mikhail S. DASHKEVICH, who studied morphological patterns of the structure and development of connective tissue formations (soft core) of the human body, in particular fascia and tissue planes, paravasal and paraneural fibrous structures.
1971-1982 – Prof. Nikolay D. SHIROCHENKO, who contributed to the study of morphological and biochemical parallels in the structure of various connective tissue structures and their age-related changes.
1982-1993 – Assoc. Prof. Vladimir S. RUBLEV
Keeping the good traditions of the Department, its trainees explore the scientific direction once offered by Prof. Romodanovskii. Comprehensive research on structural and functional aspects of lymphatic systems continues under the supervision of Professor Irina N. PUTALOVA, the Head of the Department nowadays.

Today the Department collaborates with clinical departments of OSMU to create useful products and technologies that can be implemented by specialists in daily medical practice.
