The Department of Internal Medicine (Intermediate Level) was established in 1922. Professor Petr I. ZARNITSYN was the first Head of the Department.
In 1934 Prof. Gennady A. PANDIKOV, MD, PhD was assigned as the Head of the Department. That period had been marked by the intense studying of brucellosis.
In the years 1940-1960, the Department was headed by Prof. Raymond M. AKHREM-AKHREMOVICH, MD, PhD. Under his supervision, the Department continued to research brucellosis, opisthorchiasis, and Omsk hemorrhagic fever.
Prof. Nikolai M. TATARINTSEV, MD, PhD, the Head of the Department in 1961-1982, kept the scientific traditions of the Department and studied Omsk hemorrhagic fever and chronic endocrine diseases.
In 1983-2001, the Department was led by Prof. Dmitry A. POTASHOV, MD, PhD. The scientific interest was aimed at studying the issues of rehabilitation, treatment, and clinical examination of patients with non-specific lung diseases.
In 2001, the Department was integrated with the Internal Medicine (Out-Patient Setting) Department, and after that, it was headed by Prof. Vladimir A. OSTAPENKO. He was the leader of the Department till 2012.
