Brief History

The Department of Ophthalmology was established in 1922, based in the Siberian Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Zoology (now Omsk State Medical University). Prof. Alexander A. BUGAEV, MD, PhD was assigned as a first Head of the Department and remained its leader for 35 years published 16 scientific works and trained several generations of ophthalmologists.
 
During the WWII, the academic staff worked in hospitals as the doctors performed over 15 thousand surgeries and simultaneously carried out the scientific work on military trauma.
 
Since 1959, the Department of Ophthalmology is located at the Omsk Clinical Ophthalmology Hospital.
 
In subsequent years, the Department was headed by Prof. Assoc. Gdalii B. RAPIS, MD, PhD (1960-1971), Prof. German A. KISELEV, MD, PhD (1972-1996), Prof. Nikolai V. KOSYKH, MD, PhD (1997-2003).
 
Nowadays, the Department is led by Professor Oleg I. LEBEDEV, MD, PhD. The staff of the Department not only keeps the traditions but also expands the trends of scientific research as follows: glaucoma, ophthalmotraumatology, ophthalmoimmunology, diagnosis and treatment of infectious and inflammatory eye diseases.
