Brief History

The Topographic Anatomy and Operative Surgery Department was established in 1922.
 
In different periods the Department was headed by:
1922-1932 – Prof. Vladimir L. BORMAN, MD, PhD
1932-1939, 1958-1961 – Prof. Alexander I. MANUILOV, MD, PhD
1939-1943 – Prof. Sergey P. MOCHALOV, MD, PhD
1943-1948 – Prof. Mikhail K. GITIS, MD, PhD
1948-1952 – Assoc. Prof. Efim F. NIKULCHENKO, MD, PhD
1955-1958 – Prof. Yakov B. RYVLIN, MD, PhD. During this period, a lot of experiments on laboratory animals were carried out.
1961-1965 – Assoc. Prof. M. P. VILYANSKII, MD, PhD
1965-1974 – Assoc. Prof. Ivan N. BYCHKOV, MD, PhD. He was a pioneer in vascular surgery, who started replacing pathologically damaged vessels of the limbs and abdominal aorta with prostheses.
1974-2005 – Prof. Stanislav N. ELOMENKO, MD, PhD. Since 1975, abdominal surgery was a main trend in research at the Department.
2005-2010 – Igor I. KOTOV, MD, PhD. Those years had been marked by the development of surgical techniques and devices for tracheal and bronchial anastomoses, as well as the studying hernia repair of the anterior abdominal wall with lattice endoprosthesis.
